Bitcoin Holds $77K After Hot CPI: All Eyes on Yields Before the Fed

August CPI delivered a hot 0.3% monthly core reading against expectations, while annual core eased to 2.4%. Bitcoin wicked down to $76,000 before bouncing to $77,400; the 10-year yield and the dollar index will decide the direction into the Fed meeting.

When the data hit, screens turned red within minutes. A day earlier, core PPI had come in at 0.2% for the month against 0.3% expected, creating the impression that price pressure on the producer side was cooling. Consumer inflation painted the opposite picture and took back most of that relief. I think that split is the real message of the day: costs breathe easier while shelf prices refuse to cool at the same pace.

The headline numbers are not what upset the market. Monthly CPI at 0.4% and annual at 3.4% matched expectations exactly; no surprise there. The negative surprise sat in monthly core: 0.3% against 0.2% expected and 0.2% previously. Strip out food and energy and the pace of price gains accelerated again. That is precisely the line the Fed watches most closely.

Seen from the other side, the picture is not that dark. Annual core inflation fell from 2.5% to 2.4%, in line with forecasts. There is no data to claim inflation is re-accelerating out of control. The honest sentence is this: the yearly decline continues, but the last month's momentum is not cooling as fast as the Fed wants.

Central banks cannot read annual figures alone, since the yearly number carries twelve months of history. To see where the economy is heading now, the Fed must weigh recent months. What it wanted was monthly core stuck between 0.1% and 0.2% for several months in a row. That is why the 0.3% print drew more attention than the headline.

The acceleration in the headline should not be dismissed either: monthly inflation jumped from 0.1% to 0.4%. Oil's share has to be separated here. Brent pushed past $100 on geopolitical tension and closed the week up nearly 8%. The August data does not fully contain that spike; if oil stays high, the September headline could print under more pressure.

The conclusion for the Fed is now clear: wait, do not rush to ease, keep the tightening option on the table. Hike pricing had already reached toward 70% before the meeting; after the data, independent pricing pointed to 85-90% for the September 16 decision. My base case remains a hold while watching the data, with a hike as the second scenario. Near-term cut hopes are shelved after this print.

The labor backdrop strengthens the hawkish wing. Employment is solid, unemployment shows no deterioration, weekly claims sit near 200,000. So the argument that a hike would wreck the economy is off the table. Add accelerating monthly core on top and waiting, or even hiking, becomes easier for the Fed.

The first read for Bitcoin was negative and red candles followed. The video's framework was explicit: 0.1% on core would have been very bullish, 0.2% meant no problem, 0.3% meant trouble; we got 0.3%. Independent price tracking confirmed it: Bitcoin wicked to $76,000 on the print, bounced to $77,400 within minutes, and even saw above $79,000 during the day. The first leg sold, then buyers of the falling annual core stepped in.

From here the first screen to watch is not Bitcoin. First the 10-year yield, then the dollar index, and only then Bitcoin. Before the data the yield stood near 4.95% with everyone talking about the 5% line; a lasting break above would tighten financial conditions across risk assets from Nasdaq to growth stocks. If yields rise, the dollar firms and Bitcoin falls, the market is pricing a more hawkish Fed, and the selling pressure must be taken seriously.

The opposite scenario is also live: if yields refuse to rise, the dollar stays soft and Bitcoin reclaims the first selloff despite the 0.3% core, the market may be buying the falling annual trend. Then the continuation of the first drop is in doubt. My watch zone is $76,000 to $77,000: if price holds above, yields calm down and spot buyers return, the CPI effect stays contained. No panic on my side, but I have cut yesterday's optimism in half.

AI commentary

"This print tells me the Fed's job is not done yet, but I also find it too early to write a doom scenario off a single monthly number. I will look for confirmation in bond yields, not in the first candle."

AI assessment

Let me aim the strongest objection at myself: loading this much meaning onto a single 0.3% monthly print may be overdone. Shelter carries heavy weight in CPI and reflects rents with a lag; the academic literature documents that delay. The market itself faded the first selloff and Bitcoin pushed back above $79,000. The one-month-noise read is at least as legitimate as mine.

The missing leg in the video is the PPI side. The narrative rests on producers calming down, yet independent market coverage wrote that the producer data overshot expectations. Until that conflict is resolved, the claim that cost relief never reached consumers hangs in the air. Core PCE near 3.3%, the gauge the Fed actually targets, also gets a single sentence; judgment before the PCE and jobs data is premature.

Note the identity of the source too: a crypto-focused publisher saying no panic amid red candles while promoting two-way trading and a community channel in the same video. Audience retention in a fear moment and analysis ship in one package. I would re-check figures like the $76,000-$77,000 zone and the 85-90% hike pricing on an independent screen at decision time; nobody should position off a single screen.

My practical verdict splits in two. For leveraged short-term traders, trading the first five-minute candle should be off limits; no direction before yields and the dollar confirm. For spot holders with a long horizon, there is no trend damage until daily closes below $76,000. My plan is plain: watch, wait for confirmation, decide on how the support zone behaves.
