MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro Unveiled: 33 Billion Transistors and 8K 60 FPS in the 2nm Era

MediaTek announced its Dimensity 9600 Pro flagship on TSMC 2nm. Debuting in the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and Vivo X500 Pro Max in late September, the chip claims Geekbench 6 single-core 4276 up 17 percent and multi-core 12,650.

MediaTek unveiled its Dimensity 9600 Pro flagship on September 15 2026 from Hsinchu. Built on TSMC 2nm N2P, it is the first announced flagship to hit that node for the vendor. Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and Vivo X500 Pro Max will be the first phones to carry it in late September China launches, while ultra variants are expected to stay with Snapdragon.

Geekbench 6 numbers shared so far show single-core 4276 up 17 percent and multi-core 12,650 up about 16 percent. Engineering sample leaks point to single-core 4,200 to 4,300 and multi-core 12,000 to 12,500. For reference Dimensity 9500 measured 3,542 single, A19 Pro 3,924 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 3,442, with multi-core at 10,830, 10,070 and 10,792 respectively.

The CPU is an all big-core 8-core layout in 2 plus 3 plus 3. Two C2 Ultra cores peak at 4.55 GHz, three C2 Pro cores at 4.35 GHz and the remaining three C2 Pro at 3.10 GHz. The Arm C2 family is orchestrated by Dimensity Scheduling Engine 3.0 for task distribution. L2 cache is 21 percent larger, total cache reaches 34.5 MB and the package holds more than 33 billion transistors.

On AI a dual NPU architecture works with the Agentic AI Engine. NPU 1090 delivers 51 percent higher LLM prefill performance and 55 percent more token generation per watt. Always-on AI power falls 40 percent while on-device model launch is 27 percent faster. Mixture of Experts support allows models up to 30 billion parameters on device, with LLM compression plus proactive suggestion and scene detection running on chip.

Graphics come from a 12-core Mali G2 Ultra NX. The Neural Graphics Architecture lets CPU and NPU sync with the GPU. MediaTek claims 27 percent higher peak graphics, 24 percent lower power at peak and 18 percent faster ray tracing with third generation hardware ray tracing. The Steel Nomad Light test shows 18 percent gain and Solar Bay scores 3029, with peak power cut 24 percent.

Gaming and display target 185 FPS at up to 185 Hz. WQHD Plus at 180 Hz is supported with Panel OverDrive multi-frame compensation and a color gamut 38 percent wider than DCI P3. Multi-frame processing for motion blur reduction runs as joint GPU and CPU work, with the Red Magic Astra tablet form cited as a natural match for that combo.

Camera brings the Imagiq 1290 described as the strongest ISP to date. Single sensors up to 200 megapixel are supported, with video up to 8K 60 FPS, 4K 60 FPS continuous object tracking autofocus and 4K 60 FPS 10-bit HDR recording. Content aware semantic processing, log support, 4K 120 FPS cinematic mode and 4K 240 FPS slow motion run on the same ISP, which can tap directly into the NPU for photo and video processing.

Video coding adds VVC H.266. Decoding reaches 8K 60 FPS 10-bit across HEVC AVC VP9 and AV1, while encoding offers 8K 30 FPS 10-bit and 8K 60 FPS 8-bit via HEVC and AVC. H.264 remains widespread, but H.266 arrives as a forward looking option with higher compression efficiency.

Memory and storage debut LPDDR6 and UFS 5.0 for the first time. LPDDR6 bandwidth rises 33 percent while UFS 5.0 read and write speeds roughly double versus UFS 4.0. The AI Computing Fusion Architecture pools CPU and NPU with a larger cache and intelligent allocation to keep many apps smooth in the background.

Connectivity includes 5G Advanced sub 6 GHz and mmWave, Tri SIM standby, tri-band Wi-Fi 7 up to 7.3 GHz and Bluetooth 6.2. The AI Connectivity Framework claims 30 percent better positioning accuracy and more stable handover in tough transits like subways. Game prioritized traffic pushes notifications to the background to limit ping jitter, with field tests still to prove how much that matters in daily life.

AI commentary

"In my view the 2nm race is no longer marketing but physics at its limit. On paper Dimensity 9600 Pro joins Apple and Qualcomm in the same league, but the real test will be cooling and sustained performance."

AI assessment

Steel man the strongest counter. MediaTek frames 17 percent single and 15 percent multi gains versus Dimensity 9500, yet independent analysis shows the same deck cut 9500 scores by 8.5 percent. That flatters today by shrinking yesterday. Scores of 4276 and 12,650 were taken in a controlled cooled environment, not a retail phone chassis where sustained cooling will be worse.

What is missing is sustained behavior and real consumption. The 61 percent multi-core and 37 percent single-core power improvements describe peak points, not long gaming or long 8K recording where thermal throttling starts early. Battery life, throttling curves, heat in 8K 60 FPS capture and power under sustained graphics are not yet measured in the field. Price and global availability also remain unknown, with the first wave limited to China launches.

Verification points to a conflict of interest. The vendor is both claimant and measurer. The PR release and slide deck are the primary sources, independent Geekbench figures rely on small leak samples. Package claims like 33 billion transistors, 34.5 MB cache and LPDDR6 plus UFS 5.0 can be cross checked via supply chain, but NPU metrics like token per watt need independent AI benchmark reruns.

My take is wait and watch the cooling. For Oppo and Vivo flagship buyers eager to upgrade 2nm looks like an attractive jump. For others it is early to decide before Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Apple A20 Pro comparisons land in retail devices. Vapor Chamber size, chassis design and software tuning will decide how much headroom heat leaves on the table, so buying before independent reviews carries risk.
